• Write it Down!

  • Ok, I confess. I have never been a very good note taker. I am more of a visual, hearing, hands on learner. I can’t remember what that is called because I did not take notes when I heard someone speak about it. Hang on, let me google it. Oh yeah – kinesthetic or tactile learner. I see someone doing something and think – I can do that. I will watch a how to video on you tube and go tear apart the dryer. (Which is still torn apart by the way, but that’s another story.)

Now my wife has been (gently) bugging me for years to take notes. I say gently because she is probably going to read this. Love you sweetheart. She has taken notes for years. She writes down virtually everything. I will ask her about something and somehow in her stacks of notebooks and loose leaf paper she will pull something out and say here is the information you wanted. After turning to her and asking her for the 2000th time – “What was that great idea I had the other day?” – (because I forgot to write it down), I decided to give it a try. So a while back I started my note taking adventure. It started out on post it notes. Soon I had yellow, orange and red sticky papers all over my desk. They would eventually get mixed in all the other stuff on my desk and get lost for several weeks. Then I started grabbing a full sheet of paper from the printer and scribble something at an angle somewhere on it. This drove my wife nuts. Half the time I couldn’t read what I wrote. Finally my wife put a 3 ring binder on my desk full of paper. Now for the most part, I write my notes in there. I’m still working on it, but am much better than I used to be.

If you struggle with writing stuff down, I feel your pain. You have to work at changing yourself, but it is worth it. I will always be a kinesthetic learner, but I have benefited greatly from taking notes. So consider getting yourself a 3 ring binder full of paper. You can categorize it with index tabs, for instance: finances, family, work, ideas for around the house, anything that you think about that you need to write stuff down to remember. Some of you may want to keep a journal. Whatever you think may work for you. How about writing down some goals you want to achieve? What are some practical steps you can take to achieve them? Stuff like that.

So when I woke up at 3 am this morning thinking about this message, do you think I got out of bed to write this idea down? No. I’m sure glad that when I did get out of bed I remembered to “Write it Down”. Have a blessed day!
