Talk to students and parents that are already in the school. A professional school will encourage you to do this. In a healthy and safe martial arts school, there should be plenty of smiles from parents and students. Ask them what they like about the school and the program. Ask the parents how the instructors interact with them and their children. What are the reasons that they want their children in a martial arts program? It is a good sign if the other students and parents are in there for the same reasons that you are. Are the parents happy with what they see taking place in the school? Also ask them if there is anything they don’t like. If your only negative answer is that they have to do push-ups during warm-ups then you might be in a good place. If the parents feel they are in a good place, they will generally be very happy to share their experiences with you. Next time – Character Building.
