• Seven Things to Know Before Choosing a Martial Arts School – Part One by Sensei Paul Pearson

  • 1) Define your goals! When choosing a school, think carefully about what you want for yourself or your child to receive from training in the martial arts. Is it to have fun? Is it for a social outlet? Is it for self-defense? Is it to get in shape? Is it for personal growth? Clearly define what your goals are before you visit a school. If you don’t know much about martial arts and do not know what goals to have, then be sure to ask lots of questions, such as: What kinds of things do you teach? Do you talk about bullies? Will my child become more disciplined? Do you talk about character? There is no wrong question. If you don’t know the answer to something, just ask. Professionals will be very willing to answer all your questions. Many parents of children training in the martial arts see the benefits contributing to the personal growth of their children. Martial arts instructors should consider themselves as part of the “Parent’s Team” – not the other way around. Check back for Part Two – Who is Teaching?
