• One Thing Parents Always Ask

  • Hi everyone! Hope your day is going awesome!

One thing that parents always ask is “How do I help my child stick with karate?” or “My child seems to quit all the activities that he or she gets involved in, what can I do?”  This is a very important question that every parent needs to consider and think about because this will affect the child for the rest of his life.

A couple of character traits that we all need to have are perseverance and dedication. Without them, we will not achieve the level of success that is waiting for us.  If we constantly give up when something is hard it will become a pattern in our lives.  Then eventually we will give up on REALLY important things such as jobs, businesses, marriages, children, or anything that is worth anything. We have to develop these character traits in our kids if we want them to succeed. They do not come naturally. Here are a couple of tips that have helped us as parents encourage our kids to not give up.

    1. Words of Encouragement – This is #1!  Sometimes all it takes is for someone to believe in them.  Tell them they are doing well.  Tell them specific things that stand out to you that are signs of accomplishments.

    2. Be Involved in Your Child’s Life – ff  If at all possible, do the activity with them.  Practice with them.  Watch them at their lessons and be excited with them.  Try not to just drop them off, but watch what they are doing.

    3. Rewards – If you want your kids to improve in an area think of something they really like (maybe ice cream?) and reward them with it as a special treat.  Don’t bribe them, reward them.  There is a difference.  It shows that you acknowledge their hard work and you are happy for them.  It is a celebration for what they have done.  Not all the time, but only when it is truly deserved or earned.

Have you been struggling with keeping your kids motivated?  Is it always a battle to get them to do something?  You are not alone.  Many parents deal with these issues on a daily basis.  Guess what?  You can’t change your child, but you can change how you respond to them.  Get the best parenting advice available on the market!  Do it today! 4. If they are in Karate – Buy Them Proper Equipment associated with karate so they can practice at home.  Equipment makes great presents for birthdays or Christmas.  If they are playing an instrument, buy them special things – posters, CDs of professionals playing that instrument so they can develop a vision for their future.  Whatever they are working at, make it a way of life to encourage excellence in that field.

    5. Give Them a Vision – We have a karate student that took a picture of himself in a karate stance.  He then printed an 8×10 picture and put it on his wall.  He looks at it every day.  It reminds him – “Oh, yes, I know why I started in karate. I want my black belt someday.”  It keeps his vision before his eyes.  It is very easy for all of us to forget why we started training in something.  We must keep our vision foremost at all times.

One last thing I wanted to leave you with is a story I came across.  It is about an Olympian athlete named Bryan Clay.  He has had an incredible journey.  He was rebellious, abusing drugs and alcohol, constantly in trouble with the authorities – teachers, parents and police.  He was short and did not look like a champion.  He was raised in a broken family, but he went on and became the most unlikely Olympic decathlete in history.  Despite his size and stature, Bryan Clay was the Silver Medal Winner of the 2004 Olympic Decathlon and the Gold Medal Winner in 2008.
