Heroes

I took two of my sons to the midnight showing of The Avengers last night. Awesome flick – I highly recommend. Clean too – always a plus.

Everyone is looking for a hero. We all love heroes. Most people love to root for the good guys. Exactly what is a hero? Dictionary.com says – “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.” Wikipedia says – “a man or woman who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, displays courage and the will for self sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greater good of all humanity.”

Very cool. Deep down I think we all would like to become heroes or heroines…or at least hope that we would be when the time came.

Growing up I always liked the comic book heroes – Iron Man, Captain America, Spider Man, Hulk…etc. Today Jesus is my ultimate hero. The Bible says – “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” Many people down through the ages have given their lives for the benefit of others.

Were they perfect? – No. Were they scared? – Probably. What made them do it? I believe they had heart, character and faith that overcame the challenges they faced.

I don’t think that real heroes consider themselves as heroes. They just do what they have to because they know it is the right thing to do.
