  • Welcome to Shorinkan Family Karate Dojo

We are a traditional Okinawan Shorin-ryu Shorinkan karate school located in Canon City, Colorado that strives for student satisfaction and excellence. It is our goal to be able to help you bring out the best in yourself, your children and your whole family. We started this school because of a mutual love for the family and for martial arts. Our school is about building people up, supporting their lives and being part of a supportive family.

Our passion is to help families succeed, especially the children. Many parents have discovered that karate training is one of the most beneficial activities for children. Ingrained inside of karate training is respect, discipline, focus, perseverance, dedication, plus learning the importance of exercise and staying healthy. Studies have proven that exercise helps kids with their health, with their attitude, with their sleep and also in the classroom.

We are a traditional martial arts school. Our karate comes from the island of Okinawa Japan. We punch, kick, block, elbow, and perform all kinds of strikes but (say experts), it's the respect kids learn while practicing karate that can be the most important benefit. It carries over into school, helping to improve behavior and even grades, according to recent research. Traditional martial arts will bring out the best in each person training!

The head instructor of Shorinkan Family Karate is Sensei Jim Wick, an internationally certified Black Belt in Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan Karate and Kobudo(weapons). Sensei Wick trains directly under and is awarded ranking by Hanshi Judan Shugoro Nakazato of Okinawa Japan, Kyoshi Nabil Noujaim of El Centro, CA and his immediate instructor Kyoshi David Rogers of Paso Robles, CA.

Sensei Wick married his wife Kelly in 2003. Their family moved to Cañon City, CO in the spring of 2004 to operate Lost Paddle Rafting at the Royal Gorge. They have two children both of whom are involved in martial arts.

Thank you again for your interest in our dojo and we look forward to training with you very soon!
